BBC Radio 1Xtra, often called 1Xtra, is a special digital radio station from the BBC in the United Kingdom. It focuses on playing modern black music. The station started broadcasting on August 16, 2002, at 6 PM. Before it launched, it was known as Network X during its planning stages.

1Xtra is a sister station to BBC Radio 1. They even broadcast from the same building, Yalding House, in central London. This building is part of the BBC's large Broadcasting House complex, which has many radio studios and offices.

What Music Does 1Xtra Play?

1Xtra plays a wide variety of music. You can hear hip hop, grime, bassline, garage, dubstep, funky, drum and bass, bashment, soca, reggae, gospel music, bhangra, soul, and R&B. These songs come from artists in Britain, the Caribbean, Africa, and North America.

You can listen to 1Xtra in many ways. It's available on DAB digital radio. You can also find it on digital satellite television and digital terrestrial television (like Freeview). Plus, you can listen online through the Internet. The station also has its own news team called 1Xtra News, which creates news stories just for its listeners.

Who Listens to 1Xtra?

BBC Radio 1Xtra is mainly for young people. Its audience is usually between 15 and 30 years old. This age range is a bit younger than its sister station, Radio 1, which aims for listeners up to about 35.

In 2004, the BBC explained that 1Xtra plays music 24 hours a day. It also has special news updates and other spoken programs. These parts of the broadcast are made to be very interesting and important to the station's audience.
