Eva Koppel (born January 1, 1916, in Copenhagen, Denmark – died August 2, 2006, in Copenhagen) was a famous Danish architect. She worked closely with her husband, Nils Koppel. Together, they ran one of Denmark's biggest architecture companies.

Eva Koppel's Early Life and Education

Eva Koppel studied architecture at the Danish Academy in Copenhagen. She attended from 1935 to 1941. In 1936, she married Nils Koppel, who was also an architect.

Working with Alvar Aalto

Before starting their own business, Eva and Nils Koppel gained valuable experience. They worked in the studio of a famous Finnish architect named Alvar Aalto. They were in Finland from 1938 to 1939. Later, they joined him again in Stockholm, Sweden, from 1943 to 1945.

Starting Their Own Firm

In 1946, Eva and Nils Koppel opened their own architecture firm. At first, they designed simple, modern homes. This included a house for Henning Koppel in Birkerød. They also designed their own home in Gentofte in 1946, which is now a protected building.

Major Architectural Projects

Eva and Nils Koppel became very well known after designing the Langeliniepavillonen (Langelinie Pavilion) in 1957. After this success, they became famous for designing large public buildings. They also worked on restoring important places.

Notable Buildings and Styles

Many of their projects were designed in the Brutalist style. This style often uses raw concrete and has a strong, blocky look. Some of their major works include:

  • The Hans Christian Ørsted Institute in Copenhagen (built 1955–1962).
  • The Technical University of Denmark in Lundtofte (built 1961–1975).
  • The Panum Building in Copenhagen (built 1966–1986).
  • The South Campus of the University of Copenhagen on Amager (built 1972–1979).

They also helped with the Statens Museum for Kunst, which is Denmark's national gallery, between 1966 and 1970.

Awards and Contributions

Eva Koppel was recognized for her talent and hard work. In 1955, she received the Eckersberg Medal. This is a respected award for artists in Denmark.

From 1951 to 1973, she was the vice-chairman of the board for the Design School for Women. In 1972, she became a member of the Royal Danish Academy. People remember Eva Koppel not just for her amazing buildings, but also for being musical, creative, and a great leader.
