History of the Academy
The Royal Danish Academy started a long time ago. It was first called the Royal Danish Academy of Portraiture, Sculpture, and Architecture. It opened on March 31, 1754, as a special gift to King Frederick V of Denmark on his 31st birthday.
Changes to the Academy's Name
In 1771, the school's name changed to the Royal Danish Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. At that time, a new idea was introduced. It encouraged young workers to take extra drawing classes. This helped them learn about "good taste" in art and design. This idea was very helpful after the Copenhagen Fire of 1795, when many new buildings were needed.
In 1814, the name changed again to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. This is the name it still uses today. The main school is still in its original building, the Charlottenborg Palace. This palace is located in Copenhagen on Kongens Nytorv. The School of Architecture moved to former naval buildings on Holmen in 1996.
What the Academy Teaches
The academy teaches and studies many art subjects. These include painting, sculpting, architecture, and photography. Students also learn about graphics, performance art, and video. The history of these art forms is also a big part of the studies. The Danish Ministry of Culture oversees the academy.
It is important to know that the School of Architecture, Design, and Conservation is now a separate institution. It is called KADK. It is different from the Schools of Visual Arts.
