Henning Larsen (born August 20, 1925 – died June 22, 2013) was a famous Danish architect. He was known around the world for designing important buildings. Two of his most famous works are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Riyadh and the amazing Copenhagen Opera House.

Becoming an Architect

Henning Larsen started his journey to become an architect by studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He finished his studies there in 1952. After that, he continued to learn even more at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. He learned from other great architects like Arne Jacobsen and Jørn Utzon.

Starting His Own Firm

Larsen decided to open his own architecture company, which is now called Henning Larsen Architects. This company still designs buildings today. From 1968 to 1995, he also taught architecture as a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He loved sharing his knowledge with new students. In 1985, he even started an architecture gallery and a magazine called SKALA to show off cool building designs.

Famous Buildings Designed by Henning Larsen

Henning Larsen designed many different types of buildings all over the world. Here are some of his most well-known projects:

  • 1968: The campus center in Dragvoll at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway.
  • 1982–84: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This building is very famous for its unique design.
  • 1997: An extension to the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, an art museum in Copenhagen.
  • 2004: The Copenhagen Opera House in Denmark. This building is a modern masterpiece and a landmark in Copenhagen.
  • 2004: The IT University of Copenhagen, also in Denmark.
  • 2008–2011: Harpa, a concert hall and conference center in Reykjavík, Iceland. This building is known for its beautiful glass facade that changes colors.

Awards and Honors

Henning Larsen received many awards for his amazing work in architecture. These awards show how much his designs were appreciated around the world.

  • 1965: He won the Eckersberg Medal, a Danish award for artists.
  • 1985: He became an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects.
  • 1989: He received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture for his design of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Riyadh.
  • 1991: He became an honorary member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
  • 2012: He was given the Praemium Imperiale, which is a very important global arts prize.
