Eva Pilarová, whose birth name was Bojanovská, was a famous Czech jazz and pop singer. She was born on August 9, 1939, and passed away on March 14, 2020. She was one of the most beloved singers in Czechoslovakia for many years.

Her Early Life and Music
Eva Pilarová was born in the city of Brno. She started singing when she was a child, even studying classical music. She later studied singing at the Janáček Academy of Arts, also in Brno.
Her biggest musical heroes were the legendary singers Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. They inspired her own unique style.
Starting Her Career
In 1960, Eva joined the Semafor Theater in Prague. This was a very popular theater where she sang with other famous performers like Jiří Suchý and Jiří Šlitr.
For a short time in 1962, she left Semafor to sing at the Theater Rokoko. But she returned to Semafor in 1964. That same year, she had a small role in the movie If a Thousand Clarinets. She played a chorus-singer from a girls' school.
Her Hit Songs
Throughout her singing career, Eva Pilarová had many hit songs. She was also famous for her amazing duets. She sang with other well-known artists like Waldemar Matuška and Karel Gott.
After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Eva traveled to the United States several times. There, she performed mainly for Czech people who had moved away from their home country.
More Than Just Singing
Eva Pilarová was active in her singing career right up until she passed away in Prague. Besides music, she also wrote two cookbooks!
She was also a very talented photographer. She loved taking pictures, especially of nature and cities. Her photos were so good that she even had several photo exhibitions in the Czech Republic.
Eva Pilarová was not only famous in Czechoslovakia (which is now the Czech Republic), but she was also well-known in other parts of Europe. For example, at the Split Festival in 1970, she sang the song My Captain (Kapetane moj).
A Fond Farewell
A special memorial service for Eva Pilarová was held on June 3, 2020. It took place at the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Prague. Many artists performed, including Adam Plachetka and Monika Absolonová. Important government officials and famous actors like Jiřina Bohdalová also attended.
Her song "There for Water in the Reeds" (which means Paradise), sung with Waldemar Matuška, was remembered fondly. Singer Vojta Dyk gave a touching farewell speech on behalf of all the singers.
How She Was Respected
Many people admired Eva Pilarová's talent. The Czech writer Josef Škvorecký especially loved her voice. He often praised her, saying:
- Without her art, something would be missing in the Czech culture.
- If there was anybody, who could sing everything, it was Pilarka.
Her Awards
Eva Pilarová won many awards for her singing:
- She won the prestigious Golden Nightingale award in Czechoslovakia four times (in 1963, 1964, 1967, and 1971).
- In 1967, she won the International Intervision Song Contest in Bavaria.
- Also in 1967, she received the Grand Prix du Disque award for her beautiful performance of a song called "Requiem".
