Eva Roe Gaggin (born January 9, 1879 – died May 7, 1966) was an American author who wrote books for children. She is also known as E. R. Gaggin. She won a special award called the Newbery Honor in 1942 for her book, Down Ryton Water.

Eva Roe Gaggin was born as Mary Eva Gourley on January 9, 1879. Her birthplace was Lawrence, Massachusetts. When she was 11 years old, her name was legally changed to Mary Eva Gourley Roe. This happened on March 18, 1890, after she was adopted by Edward Drake Roe, Jr. He was a mathematics professor at Syracuse University.

Early Life and Education

Eva grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She started writing stories when she was very young. When she was just 8 years old, one of her first stories won a prize from a newspaper in Boston.

In 1905, Eva graduated from Syracuse University. She earned a Bachelor of Philosophy degree. On January 11, 1911, she married Edwin Hall Gaggin, who was an architect. They had a child named John Bridge Gaggin, who sadly passed away on the day he was born in 1919.

Her Books and Awards

Eva Roe Gaggin became a well-known children's book author. In 1939, a publishing company called The Viking Press released her book An Ear for Uncle Emil. This story was about a girl from Switzerland and her doll. A famous artist named Kate Seredy drew 83 pictures for the book.

In 1941, Viking Press published another one of her books, Down Ryton Water. This book told a story about the Pilgrims who traveled on the famous Mayflower ship. The drawings for this book were created by Elmer Hader.

Eva Gaggin's book Down Ryton Water received a special recognition. It was awarded a Newbery Honor in 1942. This award is given to authors for outstanding books for children.

Eva Roe Gaggin passed away at her home on May 7, 1966.
