The Evans County Courthouse is an important old building in Claxton, Georgia. It's where the local government of Evans County works. This building also has a tall clock tower. It was built in 1923 and is home to the county's main court, called the Superior Court. Because it's so important and historic, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980.

Building History
How Evans County Started
Evans County was officially created in 1914. First, a special idea for a new county was suggested in the Georgia General Assembly (which is like Georgia's state parliament) on August 11. Then, the people of Georgia voted on November 23 to make it an official county.
The First Courthouse
Once Evans County was created, it needed a place for its government to operate. This main government building is called a courthouse. The very first building used as a courthouse was called the White Building. It had three floors and was first built by Mr. R. King White. Later, Mrs. Ben Daniel bought it. Her husband, Dr. Ben Daniel, used part of the building as his office. This building served as the county's courthouse until 1923.
Building the Current Courthouse
The courthouse you see today was finished in 1923. It was built by J.J. Baldwin and a company called West Point Iron Works. The whole project cost $60,000.
Changes Over Time
Over the years, the courthouse has been updated. The inside of the building was redone in 1979 and 1980. In 2003, the clock in the bell tower was fixed and restored so it could tell time again.
On December 28, 1994, a special monument was placed outside the courthouse. The American Legion, a group for military veterans, put it there to honor men from Evans County who died while serving in different wars. These wars included World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
