About Evelyn Carslaw
Evelyn Carslaw was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1881. She loved art from a young age. She studied at the famous Glasgow School of Art for ten years, from 1897 to 1907.
After her studies in Glasgow, Evelyn traveled to Paris, France, to learn even more about art. She loved to travel! She painted beautiful landscapes in countries like Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. She used both oil paints and watercolors for her artworks.
In 1905, she married Dr. R.B. Carslaw, who was a surgeon. They had five children together. Their family home was in a place called Rhu, near Gare Loch in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. They really enjoyed sailing boats!
Evelyn's husband, Dr. Carslaw, even wrote a book in 1944 called Leaves from Rowan's Logs. It was about a sailing trip they took around the west coast of Scotland. Guess who drew all the pictures for the book? Evelyn did!
Later in her life, Evelyn lived in Helensburgh. There, she became good friends with another talented artist, Norah Neilson Gray.
Evelyn was part of the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists starting in 1905. This was a group for women artists in Glasgow. She also showed many of her paintings at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
