Evelyn Faltis (born 1887, died 1937) was a talented composer from Bohemia, a historical region in what is now the Czech Republic. She wrote many different kinds of music, including pieces for orchestras, smaller groups of instruments, and singers.

Life

Evelyn Faltis was born in Trautenau, Bohemia, in 1887. She was the second of three daughters. Her parents, Carl Johann and Maria Anna Cecilia Magdalena Faltis, came from a well-known family in Vienna.

Evelyn started learning music at a convent in Paris. Later, she studied at the Vienna Music Academy. Her teachers there included Robert Fuchs and Eusebius Mandyczewski. She also studied at the Dresden Conservatory with Felix Draeseke and Eduard Reus. After that, she learned from Sophie Menter in Munich.

After finishing her studies, Evelyn moved to Berlin. However, she settled in Vienna in 1933. She became the first woman to work as a coach at the famous Bayreuth Festival. She also worked as an accompanist, playing piano for singers or other musicians. She worked at the Nuremberg Stadttheater am Ring and the Darmstadt Hoftheater. After 1924, she worked at the Berlin Städtische Oper. Evelyn Faltis died in Vienna in 1937 from pneumonia.

Works

Evelyn Faltis wrote music for many different groups. She composed pieces for a full orchestra, for smaller groups of instruments (called chamber ensembles), for single instruments like the piano, and for choirs.
