Exploring Trutnov's Layout
Trutnov is made up of several parts. These include areas like Dolní Předměstí and Vnitřní Město. It also includes smaller villages such as Adamov, Babí, and Poříčí. Each part helps make up the whole town.
What's in a Name? The Meaning of Trutnov
The name Trutnov comes from an old German phrase, truten ouwe. This phrase means "cute floodplain." A floodplain is a flat area of land next to a river that sometimes gets covered by water. This name tells us a bit about the land where the town was built.
Trutnov's Location and Landscape
Trutnov is located about 39 kilometers (24 miles) north of Hradec Králové. A very small part of the town's border touches Poland. Most of Trutnov is in the Giant Mountains Foothills. These are hills at the base of larger mountains.
The town also reaches into the Broumov Highlands to the east. A small part in the north even extends into the Giant Mountains themselves. The highest point near Trutnov is on the slopes of Dvorský les Mountain. It is about 965 meters (3,166 feet) above sea level. The main part of the town sits in the valley of the Úpa River.
A Look Back: Trutnov's History
Trutnov was first mentioned in writing in the year 1260. It was started around 1250 by a noble family called Švábenský of Švábenice. They first named it Úpa, after the river.
In 1301, King Wenceslaus II bought the entire area. By then, it was already known as Trutnov. From 1400 to 1599, Trutnov was a "dowry town" for Bohemian queens. This meant the town's income helped support the queens.
In 1421, the town was taken over by Jan Žižka during the Hussite Wars. These were important wars in Czech history. Trutnov was also the site of the Battle of Trautenau in 1866. This battle happened during the Austro-Prussian War.
Trutnov's Economy and Jobs
Trutnov has some big companies that provide many jobs. Two of the largest are Vitesco Technologies Czech Republic and Tyco Electronics EC Trutnov. Both of these companies make electrical parts for cars. They each employ over 1,000 people. The biggest employer that isn't a factory is the Trutnov hospital.
The Krakonoš Brewery is also in Trutnov. It started in 1582, making it one of the oldest breweries in the country.

There is also a special course for slalom on the Úpa river in Trutnov. Slalom is a sport where people paddle a boat through gates on a river. A competition called Trutnovské slalomy has been held here every year since 1965.

The historic heart of Trutnov is the Vnitřní Město area. Its center is Krakonoš Square (Krakonošovo náměstí). This area was once surrounded by town walls in the 14th century. You can still see parts of these old walls today.
