History of Everett, Georgia
Everett was named after a man named Robert Hammond Everett (1850-1935). He lived in Brunswick, Georgia. Mr. Everett owned a lot of land with trees in this area. He also ran a mill that cut wood and made cypress shingles. This mill was located near a railroad junction.
In 1894, the community was officially named Everett City, Georgia. However, it didn't grow as much as people hoped. About ten years later, it lost its official city status.
Railroad Junction and Lumber Mill
Everett was once a very busy place because of its railroad junction. Two major railroads, the Southern Railway (SOU) and the Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL), met there. The junction had many important buildings. These included a yard tower, a freight house for goods, and a passenger depot for travelers. There was also a stock yard for animals and several "section houses." These houses were homes for the railroad employees.
By the end of the 1960s, most of these railroad buildings were removed. By the late 1970s, only the Southern Railway tracks remained. Today, these tracks are part of the Norfolk Southern Railway (NS). The lumber mill operations in Everett closed down before World War II.
