Evika Siliņa, born on August 3, 1975, is a lawyer and a well-known politician from Latvia. She served as the prime minister of Latvia from September 15, 2023, until May 14, 2026, when she resigned. She is currently serving as a caretaker prime minister until a new leader is chosen. Before becoming prime minister, she was the Minister of Welfare from 2022 to 2023. Evika Siliņa is a member of the Unity political party. She is also the second woman in history to lead the government of Latvia.

Evika Siliņa: Latvia's Leader
Early Life and Education
Evika Siliņa was born in Riga, Latvia, on August 3, 1975. She attended the University of Latvia from 1993 to 1997. There, she earned a bachelor's degree in law. Later, she studied at the Riga Graduate School of Law. She completed a master's degree focusing on international and European law.
From 2003 to 2012, Siliņa worked as a lawyer. She specialized in business law, both within Latvia and internationally. Her clients included companies in technology and government organizations.
Journey in Politics
Evika Siliņa began her political journey by running in the 2011 Latvian parliamentary election. She was a candidate for the Reform Party in Riga, but she was not elected at that time. From 2011 to 2012, she worked as a legal adviser. She assisted the Minister of Interior.
Siliņa then served as the Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Interior. This role lasted from January 2013 until January 23, 2019. During this time, she was known for being open with journalists. She also worked hard to ensure public safety and order in Latvia. She represented the Ministry in important international groups. These included the United Nations and INTERPOL.
After January 23, 2019, she became the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister. This was when Krišjānis Kariņš led the Cabinet of Ministers.
In the 2022 Latvian parliamentary election, Siliņa was a candidate for the New Unity party. She was successfully elected to the 14th Saeima, which is Latvia's parliament.
Serving as Minister of Welfare
On December 6, 2022, Evika Siliņa received an important appointment. She became the Minister of Welfare in Krišjānis Kariņš' government. The new government was officially confirmed on December 14.
As the Minister of Welfare, one of her main goals was to increase the minimum income for people. She also became a member of a special committee. This committee focused on European Union Funds.
Becoming Prime Minister of Latvia
On August 16, 2023, the previous Prime Minister, Krišjānis Kariņš, resigned. The New Unity party then suggested Evika Siliņa as a candidate for the prime minister position. On August 24, President Edgars Rinkēvičs asked her to form a new government.
Siliņa worked to create a new group of political parties to lead the country. She announced her new government on September 13. It included the New Unity, the Union of Greens and Farmers, and The Progressives parties. Krišjānis Kariņš returned as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Her government officially gained the support of the parliament on September 15, 2023. She received 53 votes. In her speech, she talked about making Latvia more inclusive for everyone. This included helping all people in Latvia feel included. The government also planned to increase spending on defense. They aimed to complete a barrier on Latvia's borders with Russia and Belarus. Evika Siliņa is the second woman to become prime minister of Latvia. The first was Laimdota Straujuma in 2014.
On May 14, 2026, Evika Siliņa announced her resignation as Prime Minister. This happened after the Progressives party withdrew their support from her government. She is currently serving as a caretaker prime minister.
Personal Details
Evika Siliņa is married to Aigars Siliņš. They have three children together. Besides her native Latvian, she also speaks Russian and English very well.
