Eyedress's Early Life
Eyedress grew up in the Philippines and started playing the guitar when he was young. His family later moved to Phoenix, Arizona. There, he discovered punk music from people in his neighborhood.
When he was 13, his family moved to California. His father, who was an animator, got a job with 20th Century Fox. While living in Orange County, Eyedress played bass in a punk band called Liberal Underground. At age 15, he moved back to the Philippines with his family. Before becoming a musician, he designed clothes for a short time. When he was 20, he began making music beats on his laptop and sharing them online for free.
Eyedress's Music Journey
Starting Out in Manila (2013–2018)
Eyedress gained fans by making beats. A promoter in Manila introduced him to Filipino singer Skint Eastwood. They worked together on a song called "Biolumine." This song caught the attention of a French record label. They encouraged him to make an album, which led to a record deal with Abeano Records. This label is part of XL Recordings.
On December 2, 2013, Eyedress released his first collection of songs, called Supernatural. He recorded it in his bedroom using music software.
He then released his first mixtape, Hearing Colors, for free on April 11, 2014. A mixtape is like an album but often shared freely. His second collection of songs, Egyptian Night Club, came out on SoundCloud on July 27, 2014. In September 2014, he released "Polo Tee" to honor American music producer DJ Rashad. After leaving XL Recordings, he released another mixtape called Shapeshifter in 2015.
In 2016, Eyedress signed with Lex Records. He released his first studio album, Manila Ice, in May of the next year. His album Sensitive G followed in November 2018.
Moving to Los Angeles and "Jealous" (2019–2023)
Eyedress moved from Manila to Los Angeles. He started recording new songs at his home in Silver Lake.
In late 2019 and early 2020, he released the first songs from his third album, Let's Skip to the Wedding. These songs included "Jealous" and "Romantic Lover". Both songs became very popular on TikTok. "Jealous" became a certified gold record in Australia, Canada, Poland, and the US in 2021. It reached platinum status in the US in March 2022. "Romantic Lover" was certified gold in the US in April 2022. The album itself was released on August 7, 2020, after some delays.
His next album, Mulholland Drive, came out on August 27, 2021. Soon after, the song "Something About You" from the album became very popular in the US. Rolling Stone magazine said it was the fastest-growing song on streaming services in September 2021. In January 2022, Eyedress was ranked number 35 on the Billboard Emerging Artists chart. "Something About You" was certified gold in the US in May 2022.
Eyedress also teamed up with Filipino American artist Zzzahara. They formed a group called The Simps. Their first album together, Siblings, was released on February 14, 2022. They connected over their Filipino background and similar music tastes. Zzzahara later started playing guitar in Eyedress's live band.
In April 2022, Eyedress performed at the Coachella festival with his new band. They played new songs from his fifth album, Full Time Lover. This album was released on August 26, 2022. It has 28 songs that mix hip-hop, post-punk, and shoegaze styles. After the album, Eyedress released a cover of Blur's song "Song 2". He also appeared on Nosaj Thing's song "Different Life."
On October 5, 2022, a remix by Eyedress of the song "L's" was released. The next day, Eyedress performed live in Brooklyn. He was the main act at a Lex Records event.
A remix of his song "House of Cards" by Kevin Shields was released on January 23, 2023. RCA Records released "Flowers & Chocolate," his first song for a major record label, on February 13. It came with a music video directed by Eddie Huang. In March, "Jealous" became 2x Platinum and "Romantic Lover" became Platinum. Eyedress also works with other well-known artists like Mac DeMarco and Clairo.
