Early Life and First Steps in Music
Eyedress grew up in the Philippines and started playing the guitar when he was young. His family later moved to Phoenix, Arizona. There, he was introduced to punk music by other kids in his neighborhood.
When he was 13, his family moved to California. His father, who is an animator, began working for 20th Century Fox. While living in California, Eyedress joined a crust punk band called Liberal Underground as a bass player. At age 15, he moved back to the Philippines with his family. Before becoming a full-time musician, he briefly designed clothes. At 20, he started creating his own music by making beats on his laptop and sharing them online for free.
Music Career
Starting Out in Manila (2013–2018)
By sharing his music online, Eyedress started to get a small group of fans. A music promoter in Manila introduced him to another Filipino singer, Skint Eastwood. They worked together on a song called "Biolumine." This song got the attention of a French record label.
Soon after, he signed a record deal with Abeano Records. On December 2, 2013, he released his first extended play (EP), called Supernatural. An EP is like a short album. He recorded all the music for it in his bedroom using a software program called FL Studio.
In 2014, Eyedress released a free collection of songs, called a mixtape, titled Hearing Colors. Later that year, he released another EP called Egyptian Night Club. In 2015, he released a new mixtape called Shapeshifter. In 2016, he signed with a new label, Lex Records. He released his first full album, Manila Ice, in 2017, followed by his second album, Sensitive G, in 2018.
Moving to Los Angeles and Finding Success (2019–2023)
Eyedress moved from the Philippines to Los Angeles and started recording new music at his home. In late 2019 and early 2020, he released songs from his third album, Let's Skip to the Wedding. Two of these songs, "Jealous" and "Romantic Lover", became very popular on the social media app TikTok.
The success of "Jealous" was huge. In 2021, it was certified gold in Australia, Canada, Poland, and the United States. This means it sold a very large number of copies. By March 2022, it was certified platinum in the U.S., which is an even bigger achievement. "Romantic Lover" was also certified gold in the U.S. in April 2022.
His next album, Mulholland Drive, came out on August 27, 2021. A song from that album, "Something About You", also became a viral hit. Rolling Stone magazine reported it was one of the fastest-growing songs on streaming services in the U.S. In January 2022, Billboard magazine ranked Eyedress at number 35 on its Emerging Artists chart, which tracks up-and-coming musicians.
Collaborations and New Albums
Eyedress also started a new project with another Filipino American artist named Zzzahara. They formed a band called The Simps and released their first album, Siblings, on February 14, 2022.
In April 2022, Eyedress performed at the famous Coachella music festival. He played new songs from his next album, Full Time Lover, which was released on August 26, 2022. The album had 28 songs and mixed different styles like hip-hop and rock.
Eyedress has worked with many other artists. In 2023, he released a new song called "Flowers & Chocolate" through RCA Records, a major record label. He has also collaborated with popular musicians like Mac DeMarco and Clairo.
