Félix Malloum (born September 10, 1932 – died June 12, 2009) was an important military officer and politician from Chad. He served as the second President of Chad from 1975 to 1979.
Malloum was from southern Chad. He became a high-ranking officer in the Chadian military under the first president, François Tombalbaye. During the civil war, he was arrested in 1972. This happened because he was suspected of planning to overthrow the government. After President Tombalbaye was overthrown and killed in 1975, Félix Malloum became the new president. He took over during a time when Chad was still fighting a civil war against rebel groups in the north.
In 1978, Malloum tried to unite the country. He brought rebel leader Hissène Habré and his forces into the government. Habré was even made Prime Minister. Their alliance did not last long. Habré soon turned against Malloum in 1979. Malloum then resigned as president. This was part of a peace agreement called the Lagos Accord. A new government was formed, sharing power between different groups. After leaving office, Malloum lived in Nigeria for 23 years. He returned to Chad in 2002 and passed away in a hospital in France seven years later.
Early Life and Military Career
Félix Malloum studied at a French military academy. He served as a soldier in Indochina and Algeria. Later, he became an officer in the Chadian Military. He was also a member of the ruling Chadian Progressive Party (PPT). In 1966, he married Khalié Brahim Djadarab and they had a son.
By 1971, he was the Chief of General Staff, a very high position. In 1972, he was named Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. In July 1973, President François Tombalbaye had him arrested. Malloum was suspected of plotting against the government. However, he was set free after a successful coup on April 13, 1975.
Leading Chad
After the coup, Félix Malloum became both President and Prime Minister of Chad. He held these roles until August 29, 1978. At that time, Hissène Habré was appointed Prime Minister. The idea was to bring armed northern rebels into the government. However, this effort was not successful.
Malloum resigned from the presidency on March 23, 1979. He signed the Kano Peace Agreement. This agreement allowed the rebel groups to form a temporary government.
Life After Presidency
After leaving politics, Malloum moved to Nigeria. He lived there for 23 years. On May 31, 2002, he returned to Chad's capital, N'Djamena. As a former president, he received several benefits. These included a monthly payment, a home, and coverage for his health costs. He also had two vehicles and a driver.
Félix Malloum passed away on June 12, 2009, in Paris, France. He was 76 years old.
