Félix Mourinho's Playing Days
Félix Mourinho was born in Ferragudo, Faro District, Algarve, Portugal. He played professional football for 19 seasons. He made his debut in Portugal's top league, the Primeira Liga, in the 1955–56 season. His first team was Vitória de Setúbal.
He spent 13 seasons with Vitória de Setúbal. During this time, he helped his team win the Portuguese Cup twice. He also played in European competitions like the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
In 1968, Mourinho joined another team in the top league, Belenenses. He played there for six years. In his fifth season, 1972–73, his team finished in second place, which was his best achievement as a player. This result helped Belenenses qualify for the UEFA Cup, a major European tournament. He retired from playing in June 1974, at the age of 36.
Félix Mourinho also played one game for the Portugal national team. He came on as a substitute in a match against the Republic of Ireland in 1972. Portugal won that game 2–1.
Coaching Career
Félix Mourinho started his full-time coaching career in 1976. Before that, he had worked as an assistant coach for Belenenses while he was still playing. His first time managing a team in the top league was in the 1980–81 season with Amora. He had led Amora to win the Segunda Divisão (second division) and get promoted the year before.
He left Amora during that season and joined Rio Ave in the second division. He helped Rio Ave get promoted to the top league as well.
Mourinho's only full seasons as a manager in the top league were 1981–82 and 1983–84, both with Rio Ave. In the 1981–82 season, he led Rio Ave to a fifth-place finish, which was a great result. In the 1983–84 season, his team reached the final of the Portuguese Cup.
During the 1981–82 season, his son, José Mourinho, started to get involved with the team. José would often help his father by watching other teams and reporting back. Félix Mourinho did not often pick his son to play in the main team. However, in one game, a defender got injured, and Félix wanted his son to play. The club president did not allow it, fearing people would say it was unfair because José was the manager's son. After this, Félix and José left the club.
Félix Mourinho returned to Rio Ave in 1983 but was let go on Christmas Day 1984 after the team had some bad results. In the mid-1990s, he returned twice to manage Vitória Setúbal. In 1995, the team was relegated from the top division, winning only two of his 12 games in charge.
Family Life
Félix Mourinho was married to Maria Júlia Carrajola dos Santos, who was a teacher. They had two children: a daughter named Teresa (1960–1996) and a son named José Mourinho. His son, José, later became one of the most famous and successful football managers in the world.
Death
Félix Mourinho passed away on June 25, 2017, in Setúbal, Portugal. He was 79 years old.
