Reverend Fair Cloth Barnes (born June 22, 1929 – died July 11, 2011) was an American gospel musician. He was also the first pastor of Red Budd Holy Church in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. His music career began in 1983. He released fifteen albums, all with Atlanta International Records. His first album, Rough Side of the Mountain, became a number one hit. Six of his other albums also reached the top twenty on the music charts.

Early Years and Ministry

Fair Cloth Barnes was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, on June 22, 1929. From a young age, he was involved in church. He sang in the choir at Marks Chapel Baptist Church. In 1955, he became a minister.

He studied at United Christian College in Goldsboro, North Carolina. In 1959, he earned his doctoral degree there. After his studies, he started the Red Budd Holy Church. He preached there and also traveled around North Carolina. He sang at churches with Rev. Janice Brown.

A Star in Gospel Music

F. C. Barnes started recording music in 1983. His first album was called Rough Side of the Mountain. He made this album with Rev. Janice Brown. It was released by Atlanta International Records. This album became a huge success.

Rough Side of the Mountain reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard magazine Gospel Albums chart. It stayed in the top ten for over a year. The album sold more than half a million copies. Because of this, it was certified Gold by the RIAA. This means it sold a lot of copies! He released fourteen more albums with the same record label. Six of these albums also made it into the top twenty on the charts.

Family Life

F. C. Barnes was married to Addrine Gaskins Barnes. They lived in Greenville, North Carolina. Their marriage lasted until his death. They had four sons: Samuel, Luther, Melvin, and Tony. They also had two daughters, Demita and Valencia. His son Luther Barnes also became a well-known gospel musician.
