F. W. Bernstein was a talented German artist. He was known as a poet, cartoonist, and satirist. He also taught at a university. His real name was Fritz Weigle. A Creative Life: F. W. Bernstein's Journey

Fritz Weigle, who later became known as F. W. Bernstein, was born in Göppingen, Germany. This was on March 4, 1938. He was the only son in his family. He went to a special high school called a gymnasium. There, people knew him by the nickname Bernstein.

His Education and Early Career

In 1957, Bernstein started studying art in Stuttgart. He met another artist named Robert Gernhardt there. A year later, in 1958, they both moved to study at the Berlin University of the Arts. Bernstein finished his art teaching exam in 1961. He also studied German at the Free University of Berlin, finishing in 1964.

Bernstein began working as a teacher in 1966. He taught in different schools near Frankfurt am Main. In 1984, he became a professor. He taught caricature (funny drawings) and comics at the Berlin Academy of the Arts. This was the only job like it in Germany. He taught there until he retired in 1999.

Working with Satirical Magazines

In April 1964, Bernstein started working for a funny magazine called pardon. This magazine came out every two weeks. He helped create a special part of Pardon called Welt im Spiegel (World in the mirror). He did this with his friend Robert Gernhardt and another artist, F. K. Waechter.

Bernstein was also a founding member of a group called the Neue Frankfurter Schule. This group included many talented satirists like Gernhardt and Hans Traxler. They started their own satirical magazine, Titanic, in 1979. This magazine became very famous for its humor.

F. W. Bernstein lived and worked in Berlin. He had two children with his wife, Sabine. He passed away on December 20, 2018, when he was 80 years old.
