Discovering Göppingen's Past
The area around Göppingen has a very long history. People first settled here during the Hallstatt period, which was from 800 to 480 BC. Later, around 250 BC, a Roman settlement was found near the current Oberhofen Church.
How Göppingen Got Its Name
Historians believe that an Alemannic prince named "Geppo" started the town. This was likely sometime in the 3rd or 4th century. The town of Göppingen is named after him.
Rebuilding After the Great Fire
On August 25 1782, a big fire destroyed most of Göppingen. But the town was quickly rebuilt. In the 1800s, many factories were built in the area. Famous companies like Märklin, which makes model trains, and Schuler are still based in Göppingen today.
Cooke Barracks: A Military Base
In 1930, an air field was built north of Göppingen. The German air force, called the Luftwaffe, took it over in 1935. They named it Fliegerhorst Kaserne, which means "airfield barracks."
After World War II, from 1945 to 1949, the buildings were used to house people who had lost their homes. In 1949, the base was renamed Cooke Barracks. It was named after Charles H. Cooke, Jr., a brave soldier who died in action.
In the 1950s, the U.S. Army began using Cooke Barracks. The base became bigger to hold different army divisions. Many different U.S. Army units were stationed there over the years.
Cooke Barracks was given back to the German government in 1992. For a while, it again housed refugees. Today, the area is used for civilian purposes.
