In 1962, at just 18 years old, Poletti joined Torino, a top-tier club in Serie A. He made his debut for Torino on 21 October 1962. He stayed with the club for nine seasons, until 1971.

During his time at Torino, Poletti played in 275 official matches. He scored 18 goals in Serie A, which is impressive for a defender. He also scored 4 goals in the Coppa Italia and 1 goal in European competitions. He is the 14th player with the most appearances for Torino.

Poletti was known as a strong full-back who could help both in defense and attack. He even took many of the team's penalty kicks! He won the Coppa Italia with Torino twice, in the 1967–68 and 1970–71 seasons.

Later Club Career

After leaving Torino, Poletti played for Cagliari from 1971 to 1974. He then spent one season with Sampdoria, where he finished his playing career in 1975. In total, he played 294 games in Serie A, scoring 20 goals.

The "Match of the Century"

He was part of the Italian team that played in the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. He famously played in the semi-final match against West Germany, which is often called "the Match of the Century." Italy won that thrilling game in extra time.

Italy then reached the final of the tournament. However, they were defeated by Brazil with a score of 4–1.

Poletti also played for the Italian B team six times. He won a gold medal with the Italian team at the 1963 Mediterranean Games in Naples.
