Early Life and Family

Fadrique Enríquez was born around 1465. His father was Alonso Enríquez, and his mother was María de Velasco. Fadrique inherited lands and the castle of Medina de Rioseco from his father.

On February 14, 1490, the Catholic Kings appointed him as the Admiral of Castile. This was a very important position. He was also a cousin of King Ferdinand II of Aragon.

Adventures and Marriage

Fadrique Enríquez was known for being a bit hot-tempered. Once, he had an argument with Queen Isabella I of Castile. Because of this, he was sent away to Sicily for a while.

In 1489, he was allowed to return to Spain. He then helped in important battles. These included the conquest of Baza and the Battle of Granada. These battles were part of the final stages of the Reconquista, when Christian kingdoms took back control of Spain.

While he was in Sicily, Fadrique married Ana de Cabrera. She was a very wealthy countess. They did not have any children together.

Wealth and Influence

Fadrique Enríquez held many titles. He was the Count of Melgar and the lord of several towns. He was one of the richest people in Spain at that time. His yearly income was about 50,000 ducats, which was a huge amount of money!

In 1496, he traveled with Joanna of Castile to Flanders. She was going there to marry Philip the Handsome. When he returned, Fadrique escorted Philip's sister, Margaret, to Spain. She was coming to marry Prince John.

Role in the Comuneros Revolt

Fadrique Enríquez reached his highest political power during the Revolt of the Comuneros. This was a big uprising against King Charles V in 1520.

When King Charles V was away, Fadrique became a governor of Spain. He shared this role with his cousin, Íñigo Fernández de Velasco, 2nd Duke of Frías. They worked to bring peace back to the country. For his efforts, the Emperor rewarded him with the Order of the Golden Fleece. This was a very high honor.
