Discovering Fairgrove's Past
How Fairgrove Began
Fairgrove's story started in June 1852. A man named Amzy Clay bought land from Patrick McGlone. The area around Fairgrove was mostly flat. It had rich soil, perfect for farming. However, there were many mosquitoes, so people had to drain the land.
The township was surrounded by forests. These forests had many trees like beech, maple, elm, and basswood. They grew in groups, which are called "groves." This is how the town got its name: "Fair Grove."
Connecting the Community
At first, there were no roads leading into or out of the township. Amzy Clay, his father Henry Clay, and other early settlers worked together. They cut through five and a half miles of thick forest. This helped connect their new community to nearby towns. More families began to move to the township the next spring.
Naming the Township
Before it had a name, the state of Michigan called the area "township 13 North, of Range 8 East." On December 31, 1855, the board of supervisors officially named it Fair Grove.
First School and Post Office
The first school district in the township was called the Hinson District. It was named after D.P. Hinson, who lived there. The first school building was built in the spring of 1856. Caroline E. Stoddard was the first teacher.
Fairgrove got its first post office in 1881. This happened after a railroad was built through the area. The village officially became an incorporated village in 1901.
Fairgrove's Location and Size
Fairgrove is located in Tuscola County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village covers a total area of about 1.12 square miles (2.90 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
