History of Kinde Village

In the early 1880s, a businessman named John Kinde came to Michigan's "Thumb" area. He started a general store, a lumber yard, and a grain elevator. He also opened a post office.

Train service began in 1882. This happened when the Port Huron and Northwestern Railroad built tracks through the area.

Kinde was once known as the "bean capital of the world." For over 100 years, Michigan bean soup has been a popular dish. It is even served in the U.S. Senate dining room. However, the big Michigan Bean Festival is now held in nearby Fairgrove. This festival takes place every Labor Day weekend.
