Fairmount's History
Fairmount's story began on land that was once part of the Onondaga Reservation. This land was acquired by New York State from the Onondagas between 1793 and 1795.
How Fairmount Got Its Name
Fairmount used to be part of the Town of Onondaga. In 1834, it became part of the town of Camillus. The name "Fairmount" came about in 1798. An engineer and politician named James Geddes built his large home, which he called "Fair Mount." It was located where Genesee Road (now West Genesee Street) and Onondaga Road met.
Old Buildings and Changes
The Brockway Tavern building is a very old structure in Fairmount. It was built around 1808. Over the years, it has been a tavern, a motor inn, restaurants, and even a funeral home. Today, it houses a credit union. Another old house, still used as a home, dates back to 1876.
Fairmount was once known by other names, like Tyler or Jeromeville. It officially became "Fairmount" on January 1, 1846, when its post office changed its name. This post office closed in 1899.
Transportation and Development
From 1838 until the late 1800s, Fairmount was a small stop on the Auburn and Syracuse Railroad. This railroad later became part of the New York Central Railroad.
In 1883, the Fairmount Farm Colony was started north of the hamlet. It was a working farm that helped young men with intellectual disabilities learn job skills.
Over many years, from the 1890s to the 1990s, the farmland in Fairmount was turned into neighborhoods with homes. A lot of building happened in the 1950s and 1960s. South of Fairmount, near Split Rock, there's a large area of undeveloped land. This land was once used for quarrying rocks and had a factory that made ammunition.
The Geddes Estate
The original "Fair Mount" mansion built by the Geddes family was torn down in 1929. However, a carriage house from the estate lasted until 2014. You can still see small parts of the estate's stone fences today.
In 2007, Fairmount was recognized by Newsweek magazine. It was ranked 27th on their list of "Best Places to Raise Your Kids."
