The Falk Archaeological District is a special historical place in Northern California. It was once a busy town and a big lumber mill. Today, it's part of the Headwaters Forest Reserve. The town was started by two brothers, Noah and Elijah Falk. In 2023, this important site was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

A Town Built for Lumberjacks

Noah Falk arrived in California in 1854. He teamed up with partners to create the Elk River Mill and Lumber Company. In 1884, they built the town of Falk right next to their sawmill. This town was a home for the families of lumberjacks. These workers came from many different places. Some were from Sweden, Norway, Ireland, and Nova Scotia.

The lumberjacks worked hard in the huge redwood forests. They cut down trees and sent them to the mill. Falk even had its own railroad to move the logs. After the wood was cut at the mill, it was shipped all over the world. It went through a port that is now the city of Eureka.

Life in Falk

Falk was a busy town with about 400 people. It had everything a community needed. There was a cookhouse where everyone ate. A dance hall was the place for fun and gatherings. The town also had a general store for supplies. There was a post office and a school for the children. Life in Falk was active and thriving.

Why the Town Disappeared

The town of Falk did very well for many years. But things changed in 1937. The Great Depression hit, and the lumber mill had to close. Without the mill, the town could not survive. Soon, everyone moved away, and Falk became a ghost town.

A couple named Charlie Webb and his wife were among the last people to live there. They looked after the property for the lumber company. After Charlie passed away, the lumber company decided to remove the buildings. They burned and tore down the structures in 1979. This was done because of safety concerns. Today, a special plaque stands where the town once was.

Visiting Falk Today

Even though the town is gone, you can still see parts of it. Remnants of the old town are visible along the Elk River Trail. There are signs that explain what you are seeing. These signs help visitors learn about Falk's history.

The old locomotive barn has been fixed up. It now serves as an education center. It's a great place to learn more about the history of the area.
