Famaillá is a city in Argentina. It is located in the Tucumán Province, which is like a state in Argentina. The city is about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) south of San Miguel de Tucumán, the capital city of the province.
In 2010, about 22,924 people lived in Famaillá. It is also the main town of the Famaillá Department, which is a smaller administrative area within the province.
The Empanada Capital!
Famaillá is famous for a very tasty reason: it is known as the "National Capital of the Empanada"! An empanada is a delicious baked or fried pastry filled with meat, cheese, or other ingredients.
Every September, Famaillá hosts a big festival dedicated to the empanada. People come from all over to celebrate and enjoy this popular dish.
What Famaillá Produces
Famaillá is an important area for farming. It has a special experimental agricultural station. This station is part of the National Institute of Agro-Technology (Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria, or INTA). Scientists and farmers at INTA work to find better ways to grow crops and raise animals.
The city's economy mainly relies on growing and selling two important crops:
- Sugar: Sugar cane is grown in the fields around Famaillá. It is then processed into sugar.
- Strawberry: Many strawberries are also grown here. These sweet fruits are often exported to other places.
