Fandon was started a long time ago, in 1837. Two people, Major John Patrick and James Edmonston, helped create it.
Why Was It Called Middletown?
When Fandon was first settled, it was named Middletown. This was because it was right in the middle of two other important places: Beardstown and Burlington.
Fandon and Forgottonia
In the 1970s, some people in McDonough County and other nearby counties felt like their part of Illinois was being ignored. They called this area Forgottonia. They even thought about trying to become their own state! Fandon was chosen as the capital of this imagined new state. This movement showed how much people wanted their region to be noticed.

In 2011, a TV show on the History Channel talked about Fandon. The show was called How the States Got Their Shapes.
