Early Life and Beginnings
Fann Wong was born in Singapore. Her parents, Fann Chin Khew and Wong Siew Toy, were tailors. Fann got her stage name by combining parts of her parents' last names. She has three siblings: an older sister, a younger brother, and a younger sister named Fan Wen Qing, who was also a child actress. Fann went to Temasek Secondary School.
When she was in primary school, Fann was a child actor. She appeared in several children's TV shows on SBC. At 16, she won a beauty contest held by Her World magazine. She then started a successful modeling career in Singapore. She modeled part-time for two years while studying at a private school. Later, she earned a diploma in fashion merchandising.
Career Highlights
Fann moved to Taiwan in 1993. One of her first big successes was in a TV commercial for Oil of Ulan (now Oil of Olay). In 1994, a TV producer from Singapore discovered her. He cast her in a Singaporean drama series called Dreams Come True. Fann quickly starred in two more TV shows, The Challenger and Chronicle of Life.
After just one year in the Singapore TV industry, her role in Chronicle of Life earned her Best Actress and Best Newcomer awards at the 1995 Star Awards. In 1996, her role in The Unbroken Cycle got her first international award nomination at the Asian Television Awards. She continued to act in many drama series, including A Romance in Shanghai and Wild Orchids.
In late 1996, Fann released her first Mandarin pop album, Fanntasy, in Singapore. It included a duet with Taiwanese singer Jeff Chang. The album was later released in Taiwan as I Live Alone and became very popular, helping Fann become famous across the region.
Becoming Popular Across Asia
In 1996, Fann starred in the drama Brave New World with Christopher Lee and Hong Kong actor Alex Man. This was the first time Fann and Christopher Lee acted together. Fann also sang the theme song for the show.
In 1998, Fann played the main female role, Xiaolongnü, in the Singaporean TV remake of the popular drama The Return of the Condor Heroes. She acted alongside Christopher Lee again. This show, along with her second album, Shopping, made her even more famous in Taiwan and China. A Hong Kong director saw her "Shopping" music video and cast her in the Hong Kong film The Truth About Jane and Sam. The movie was very successful in Singapore. Fann was nominated for a Best New Performer award at the 2000 Hong Kong Film Awards.
In 1999, Fann released her third album, Missing You. She also sang "Private Number" with the British boyband 911. Over the next few years, Fann focused on acting. She appeared in the Hong Kong film When I Fall in Love... With Both, the Singaporean drama Looking For Stars, and the Taiwanese drama Madam White Snake. She also hosted travel shows like Travel Hunt: Japan and Fann Adventure.
Hollywood Debut

Another noted that her "stunt work is actually more memorable than Jackie Chan's." She was nominated for Best Fight at the MTV Movie Awards 2003. In 2004, she won the Singapore Street Festival's Best International Artiste Award.
