Farah N. Louis (born September 25, 1983) is an American politician who helps lead the city of New York. She is part of the Democratic Party. As a member of the New York City Council, she represents the 45th district. This district covers many neighborhoods in Brooklyn, like East Flatbush, Flatbush, Flatlands, Marine Park, and Midwood. Her job is to make decisions that improve life for people in her district.
Farah Louis's Early Life and Schooling
Farah Louis's parents moved to the United States from Haiti. Her mother worked in healthcare, helping people stay healthy. Her father worked in law enforcement, which means he helped keep the community safe. Later, he became a yellow cab driver.
Farah went to Midwood High School. After that, she studied English at Long Island University, where she earned a bachelor's degree. She then continued her education at New York University. There, she earned a master's degree in Public Administration from the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. This type of degree helps people learn how to manage public services and government.
Her Career in Public Service
Before becoming a politician, Farah Louis worked for eight years helping people with mental health. This means she supported individuals dealing with their thoughts and feelings.
Later, she joined the office of Jumaane Williams, who was also a member of the New York City Council. She started as the director of community outreach, which meant she connected with people in the community. Then, she became his deputy chief of staff, helping to manage his office. She worked in his office for six years.
When Jumaane Williams was elected to a new role called New York City Public Advocate, his old seat on the City Council became open. Farah Louis decided to run for this open seat.
Winning Her Council Seat
Farah Louis won her City Council seat in a special election held on May 14, 2019. She received the most votes, with 3,861 people voting for her. She officially started her job on June 13, 2019.
Because of New York laws, another election was held to see if she would serve the rest of the term. She won the Democratic primary election on June 25, 2019. Then, on November 5, 2019, she won the general election with a large majority of votes.
In 2021, Farah Louis won the Democratic Primary again on June 22. Later that year, on November 2, she ran for re-election without any opponents and won, continuing her work on the City Council.
