Career in Public Service
Starting in Healthcare and Community Work
Before becoming a politician, Farah Louis worked for eight years in mental healthcare. She helped people with their mental well-being. After that, she joined the office of Jumaane Williams, who was also a member of the New York City Council.
She started as the director of community outreach. This meant she helped connect the City Council office with the people in the community. Later, she became the deputy chief of staff. This is a senior role, helping to manage the office's daily work. She worked in Williams' office for six years.
Becoming a City Council Member
In 2019, Jumaane Williams was elected as the New York City Public Advocate. This new role meant he had to leave his City Council seat. This created an open spot, called a vacancy, for the 45th district. Farah Louis decided to run for this open seat.
She won her City Council seat in a special election held on May 14, 2019. A special election is held to fill a position when someone leaves office early. She officially started her job on June 13, 2019.
Because of New York laws, another election was held to decide if she would serve the rest of Williams' term. She won the Democratic primary election on June 25, 2019. A primary election helps a political party choose its candidate.
Then, on November 5, 2019, she won the general election. A general election is where voters choose who will hold the office. In 2021, she ran for re-election and won the Democratic Primary on June 22, 2021. She ran unopposed in the general election on November 2, 2021, meaning no one else was running against her. This allowed her to win re-election easily.
Farah Louis continues to serve the people of the 45th district in the New York City Council.
