Farida Bedwei: A Tech Hero

Her Early Life and Journey

Farida Bedwei was born on April 6, 1979, in Lagos, Nigeria. Because her father worked for the United Nations Development Programme, her family lived in different countries when she was very young. She spent time in places like Dominica, Grenada, and the United Kingdom.

When Farida was just one year old, doctors diagnosed her with cerebral palsy. This is a condition that affects how a person moves and balances. Her family moved to Ghana when she was nine years old. She learned at home through homeschooling until she was twelve.

Learning and Growing

Farida started attending a government school in Ghana when she was twelve. Her parents noticed her strong interest in computers when she was fifteen. They decided to enroll her in a special one-year computer course at the St. Michael Information Technology Centre. This allowed her to learn a lot about technology very quickly, even skipping some traditional high school years.

Later, Farida continued her education in the United Kingdom. From 2004 to 2005, she earned a one-year degree in Computer Science from the University of Hertfordshire. In 2009, she also received a certificate in Project Management from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

Building a Tech Career

Farida Bedwei began her career as a software developer at a company called Soft Company Ltd (now known as the Softtribe). She then moved to Rancard Solutions Ltd. There, she grew from a solutions analyst to a Senior Software Architect, working from 2001 to 2010.

At Rancard Solutions, Farida was in charge of creating and maintaining systems for mobile phones. One of her big achievements was developing a system to help manage information for the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice. She also created PayBureau, a special online tool that helped KPMG Accra manage salaries for many different companies at the same time.

Creating Her Own Company

In 2010, Farida worked at G-Life Microfinance, where she helped design and launch new products. In April 2011, she took a big step and co-founded her own company, Logiciel Ltd., in Accra, Ghana. She became the Chief Technology Officer there.

At Logiciel Ltd., Farida led the team that created gKudi. This is a special web-based banking software, often called "cloud" software, designed for small financial organizations. Over 130 micro-finance institutions across Ghana used gKudi to help manage their banking services.

In 2015, Farida wrote her first book, a short story about her life, called The Definition of a Miracle. She has also received several awards and was appointed to the Board of Ghana's National Communication Authority.

Inspiring Others with Karmzah

Farida also used her creativity to make a superhero character with cerebral palsy! Her comic character is named Karmzah. Karmzah gets her special powers from the crutches she uses because of her cerebral palsy. This character helps show that anyone can be a hero.

As of January 2026, Farida Bedwei is a Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft. In this role, she works on exciting new Metaverse technologies, which are virtual worlds where people can interact.
