History of Farmersville
Farmersville started in 1849. It was a small settlement along important roads. Two early settlers, William Pickney Chapman and John Hendrex, named the town. They chose the name because farming was the main job for many people living there.
More families moved to Farmersville after 1854. The first doctor in Collin County, H.M. Markham, worked here by 1855. The First United Methodist Church was formed in 1856. In 1859, William Gotcher gave land for the public town square. This square is still the center of Farmersville's business area today.
A school was operating in town as early as the 1860s. The First Baptist Church of Farmersville was started in 1865.
Becoming a City
Farmersville officially became a city on June 2, 1873. John S. Rike was elected as the first mayor. The city council had five members, and Jeff Hines was the first town Marshal.
Some important places from the 1880s are still around. These include the Farmersville Times newspaper, which is the oldest newspaper in Collin County. The First Bank, now called Independent Financial, also started then. The two churches mentioned earlier are still active too.
Audie Murphy's Welcome Home
On June 15, 1945, Audie Murphy came home to Farmersville. He was the most decorated soldier from World War II. Thousands of people gathered in the town square to welcome him. This big event was even featured in Life Magazine. A special plaque on the square remembers this day.
Farming and Trade
Farmersville became an important trading center. Farming continued to be very important. In the 1930s, Farmersville was known as the "Onion Capital of North Texas." It shipped over 1,000 train carloads of onions each year! Other important crops included cantaloupe, corn, cotton, and maize.
Sister City Pact
On May 8, 2021, Farmersville signed a "Sister City Pact" with Holtzwihr, France. This happened on the 76th anniversary of VE Day, which marks the end of fighting in Europe during World War II. This agreement connects the two cities. It also honors Audie Murphy's bravery during the Battle of Holtzwihr in 1945. The people of Holtzwihr had already built a memorial in 2020. It honors the soldiers who fought there, and Audie Murphy was chosen to represent their courage.
Geography and Climate
Farmersville is in northeast Collin County, about 45 miles from Dallas.
Roads and Water
U.S. Route 380 runs through the south side of the city. It goes west to McKinney and east to Greenville. Texas State Highway 78 goes through the west side of Farmersville. It leads north to Blue Ridge and southwest to Garland. The northern part of Lavon Lake is also near the city's western edge.
Farmersville covers about 4.27 square miles (11.07 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, but a small part is water.

The weather in Farmersville has hot, humid summers. Winters are generally mild to cool. This type of weather is called a humid subtropical climate.
