The Fashion Museum in Bath, England, is a special place that shows how clothes have changed over hundreds of years. It was known as the Museum of Costume until 2007. This museum has a huge collection of fashionable clothes for everyone, from kids to adults.
The museum's amazing collection began in 1963. It started when a lady named Doris Langley Moore gave her collection of costumes to the city of Bath. The museum focuses on stylish clothes for men, women, and children. These clothes date from the late 1500s all the way to today. The museum has more than 100,000 different items! Some of the oldest pieces are fancy, decorated shirts and gloves from around the year 1600. About 100,000 people visit the museum every year.
Dress of the Year
Since 1963, the museum has had a special tradition. Every year, a fashion expert is asked to pick a "Dress of the Year." This chosen outfit then becomes part of the museum's collection. It helps show what was popular and stylish in that particular year.
Many famous designers have had their work chosen for this collection. Some of these designers include Mary Quant, John Bates, Ossie Clark, Jean Muir, Bill Gibb, Giorgio Armani, John Galliano, Ralph Lauren, Alexander McQueen, Donatella Versace, and Alber Elbaz. These designers are known for creating trends and making beautiful clothes.
Museum's Location
The Fashion Museum used to be located in the Bath Assembly Rooms. These rooms are owned by the National Trust, a group that looks after historic places. In 2019, the National Trust decided they wanted to use the Assembly Rooms for a new museum. This new museum would be about the Georgian period in Bath's history.
Because of this decision, the Fashion Museum announced it would move out of the Assembly Rooms in March 2023. The museum then started looking for a new home. The new main location chosen for the museum was the Old Post Office building in Bath. While this new building was being prepared, the museum's collection was temporarily stored and shown at the headquarters of Dents. Dents is a company famous for making luxury gloves, and their headquarters are in Warminster.
