The Fashion Museum in Bath, England, was a special place where you could see amazing clothes from different times. Before 2007, it was called the Museum of Costume. It was located in the historic Bath Assembly Rooms.

The museum's collection started in 1963. A lady named Doris Langley Moore gave her large collection of costumes to the city of Bath. The museum showed fashionable clothes for men, women, and children. It covered styles from the late 1500s right up to today. There were more than 100,000 items! Some of the oldest pieces were embroidered shirts and gloves from around 1600. About 100,000 people visited the museum every year.

Dress of the Year Collection

Since 1963, a special tradition has taken place at the museum. Every year, a fashion expert chooses one important outfit. This "Dress of the Year" then becomes part of the museum's collection. Many famous designers have had their work chosen. These include Mary Quant, John Bates, Ossie Clark, Jean Muir, Bill Gibb, Giorgio Armani, John Galliano, Ralph Lauren, Alexander McQueen, Donatella Versace and Alber Elbaz.

Where the Museum Was Located

The Fashion Museum used to be inside the Bath Assembly Rooms. The National Trust owns these rooms. In 2019, they decided to use the space for a new museum. This new museum would be about the Georgian history of Bath.

So, the Fashion Museum announced it would leave the Assembly Rooms in March 2023. It needed to find a new home for its huge collection. The museum chose the Old Post Office building in Bath as its new site. While this new place was being prepared, the collection was kept safe. It was temporarily stored and shown at the headquarters of Dents. Dents is a company that makes luxury gloves in Warminster.
