Fasnia is a town and a local area (called a municipality) on the eastern side of Tenerife, a Spanish island. Tenerife is one of the Canary Islands. Fasnia is part of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife province.

The municipality covers about 45.1 square kilometers (17.4 sq mi). It stretches from the mountains inland all the way to the sandy beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. In 2018, about 2,768 people lived there. A major road, the TF-1 motorway, runs through Fasnia.

What's in a Name? The Meaning of Fasnia

The name Fasnia comes from the town itself, which is the main administrative center. This name has a very old origin from the Guanches, who were the first people to live on the Canary Islands. You might also see it written as Fasnea in old documents.

Historians and language experts have studied what Fasnia might mean. One idea, from historian Dominik Josef Wölfel, is that it's linked to an old Berber word, tafessena or tifesseniwin. This word means 'step' or 'rung of a ladder'. Another expert, Ignacio Reyes, agrees with this idea.
