What's in a Name? The Meaning of Fasnia
The name Fasnia comes from the town itself, which is the main administrative center. This name has a very old origin from the Guanches, who were the first people to live on the Canary Islands. You might also see it written as Fasnea in old documents.
Historians and language experts have studied what Fasnia might mean. One idea, from historian Dominik Josef Wölfel, is that it's linked to an old Berber word, tafessena or tifesseniwin. This word means 'step' or 'rung of a ladder'. Another expert, Ignacio Reyes, agrees with this idea.
