The Federal Assembly (Russian: Федера́льное Собра́ние, tr. Federalnoye Sobraniye) is the main law-making body of the Russian Federation. It is like the parliament of Russia. This important group was created on December 12, 1993. It replaced an older body called the Supreme Soviet.

The Federal Assembly helps to govern Russia. It makes sure that the country runs smoothly. All its work follows the rules set in the Constitution of the Russian Federation.

What is the Federal Assembly?

The Federal Assembly is a very important part of the Russian government. It is responsible for making laws for the whole country. Think of it as the place where new rules for everyone are discussed and approved.

This assembly is made up of two different parts, or "houses." Having two houses is called being "bicameral." Both of these houses are located in the city of Moscow.

Two Main Houses

The Federal Assembly has two main parts. These are the State Duma and the Federation Council. Each house has its own special job.

The State Duma: The Lower House

The State Duma is known as the "lower house." It is the larger of the two houses. There are 450 members in the State Duma. These members are chosen by the people of Russia in elections. Their main job is to create and approve new laws. The current leader of the State Duma is Vyacheslav Volodin. He has been the chairman since October 5, 2016.

The Federation Council: The Upper House

The Federation Council is called the "upper house." It has 170 members. These members are chosen by politicians from different regions of Russia. They represent the different parts of the country. The Federation Council reviews laws passed by the State Duma. They also deal with important issues like approving treaties. The current leader is Valentina Matviyenko. She became chairwoman on September 21, 2011.

How Many Members?

In total, the Federal Assembly has 620 members. This includes all the members from both houses. The State Duma has 450 members. The Federation Council has 170 members.
