The Els Cavallets Dance
The St. Agustí convent was started by a group called the Augustinians in the 1600s. In 1881, the town council of Felanitx took over the church. To celebrate this event, they perform a special dance every year called Els Cavallets.
Six young dancers, usually between 10 and 14 years old, perform this dance. They are called Cavallets. Each Cavallet wears a cardboard horse around their waist. They are dressed in a red shirt and a green hat. They dance around a girl called La Dama, who wears a green dress and a red hat.
There are nine different dances in the Els Cavallets performance:
- es rollet
- ses tres potadetes
- s'envestida
- es canvis
- ses cadenilles
- es passeig
- es pas nou
- esses velles
- esses noves
The music for these dances is played on traditional instruments. These include the Xeremia, which is like a type of bagpipe, the Flabiol, a small flute, and a tambourine. The Els Cavallets dance is performed on the days of Santa Margalida and Sant Agustí.
