A Look at Fellingsbro's Past
The area of Fellingsbro was first mentioned in official records way back in 1331. It was called Parochia Fælansbro then. People believe the very first church in the parish was built even earlier, around the 1100s.
Early Industries and Work
In the late 1500s and early 1600s, many small factories called ironworks started up. These factories were built along the rivers that flow through the parish. They mainly made bar iron, which is a type of iron shaped into bars. Most people in Fellingsbro worked in these small iron industries or in farming. This continued until the late 1800s.
At that time, most of the ironworks closed down. Some of them were then changed into paper mills, where paper was made.
The Arrival of the Railroad
In 1857, a new railroad was built between the cities of Örebro and Arboga. A train station opened in Fellingsbro, a few kilometers east of the old church. Soon, a new town area grew around this train station. It had shops and small factories. This new area was also named Fellingsbro, after the parish.
The town became its own municipality in 1911. However, it later joined back with the rest of the parish in 1957. Finally, in 1971, the Fellingsbro Municipality became part of Lindesberg Municipality.
The Folk High School
The Fellingsbro folkhögskola was started in 1915. This type of school offers education for adults. Sadly, the original school building burned down. It was rebuilt in 1976.
Famous People from Fellingsbro
One famous person from Fellingsbro is Märtha Gahn. She was a talented artist who worked with textiles, creating beautiful fabrics and designs.
How the Population Changed
Over many years, the number of people living in Fellingsbro parish has changed. For example, in 1700, there were about 4,802 people. By 1900, the population had grown to 7,075. In 2008, the parish had about 3,691 residents.
Voting Trends in Fellingsbro
When it comes to Riksdag elections (which are like national elections in Sweden), Fellingsbro has seen some changes. For a long time, the area tended to vote for parties that were more "centre-right."
However, this started to change around 1988. Since then, people in Fellingsbro have often voted for the Social Democratic party. This party is usually considered "left-leaning."
In 2018, something interesting happened. The Centre Party, which used to be more in the middle, shifted its views more to the left. Because of this, Fellingsbro voted more to the left than the rest of Lindesberg Municipality for the first time ever.
