Sir Fergus McMaster (born May 3, 1879 – died August 8, 1950) was an important Australian businessman. He was a pioneer in the world of aviation, which means he helped start and develop flying. He was one of the three people who founded Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited. This airline company is much better known by its shorter name, Qantas.
Early Life and Beginnings
Fergus McMaster was born in a town called Morinish in Queensland, Australia. This town is close to the city of Rockhampton. When he was young, he worked with his brothers. They were sheep graziers, which means they raised sheep.
In January 1917, McMaster joined the First Australian Imperial Force. This was Australia's main military force during World War I. He served as a gunner and a dispatch rider in France during the war.
Founding Qantas
Fergus McMaster played a huge role in starting Qantas. The company was officially created in 1920. McMaster was chosen to be the chairman of Qantas. This means he was the main leader of the company.
He served as chairman for almost 27 years. He held this important position until 1947. In that year, the Australian government took over Qantas.
Recognition and Later Years
In 1941, Fergus McMaster was given a special honor. He was made a knight, which is why he is called "Sir" Fergus McMaster. This honor was given to him for his great work. He helped Qantas grow and survive. He also helped develop other companies.
Sir Fergus McMaster passed away in Brisbane on August 8, 1950.
Years later, in 2008, Qantas honored him again. They named one of their large Airbus A380 airplanes "Fergus McMaster." This was to remember his important contributions. It recognized his work in the aviation industry and especially for Qantas.
