Feri Horvat (born Franc Horvat; 26 September 1941 – 1 August 2020) was an important person in Slovenia. He was a successful manager and a well-known politician. Feri Horvat helped start a political party called the United List of Social Democrats. This party is now known simply as the Social Democrats. From July to October 2004, he held a very important job. He was the speaker of the Slovenian National Assembly, which is like the main parliament in Slovenia.

Who Was Feri Horvat?
His Early Life and Studies
Feri Horvat was born as Franc Horvat. His family lived in a village called Kuštanovci. This village is in the Prekmurje region of eastern Slovenia. At the time he was born, this area was part of Hungary. His family followed the Lutheran faith.
Feri Horvat went to college to study economics. He attended the University of Maribor in Slovenia. Studying economics helped him understand how money and businesses work.
A Career in Business
In the 1960s and 1970s, Feri Horvat became a leader in business. He was the director of several companies in Slovenia. These companies were involved in different areas, like factories and banks.
Later, from 1988 to 1991, he worked for the government. He was the Secretary for Tourism and Commerce. This was for the whole country of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which Slovenia was part of back then. During this time, he strongly supported new ideas. He wanted to bring a market system into the economy. This was a big change from the old system.
Joining the World of Politics
In 1991, Yugoslavia broke apart. Slovenia became an independent country. Feri Horvat returned to Slovenia. He was one of the people who helped create a new political party. This party was called the United List of Social Democrats. It was a left-leaning party. It was formed by joining the old League of Communists of Slovenia with other smaller parties.
In 1992, Feri Horvat was chosen to be a member of the Slovenian National Assembly. This is the main part of the Parliament of Slovenia. He took on many important roles there. He worked hard on different tasks in the parliament.
Becoming Speaker of Parliament
In June 2004, Feri Horvat was elected to a very high position. He became the speaker of the National Assembly. He took over this job from Borut Pahor. Mr. Pahor had been elected to the European Parliament. Feri Horvat held the speaker's position for a few months. He served until the Slovenian parliamentary elections later that year. After the elections, France Cukjati became the new speaker. Mr. Cukjati was from the winning party, the Slovenian Democratic Party.
