Fern Acres is located in the Puna District. In 2010, about 1,504 people lived there. This number grew quite a bit from 2000, when only 756 people called Fern Acres home.

South of Fern Acres is the Puna Forest Reserve. This is a large protected forest area. The community is about 17 miles (27 km) south of the city of Hilo. It's also about 16 miles (26 km) east of the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This park is famous for its active volcanoes!
