Fernando Gómez Colomer, born on 11 September 1965, is a Spanish former professional footballer. He was known simply as Fernando during his playing days. He played as an attacking midfielder.
Fernando spent almost his entire career with Valencia. He joined their main team at 18 years old. He played a club record 556 games and scored 142 goals for them. After he stopped playing, he also worked for Valencia in different management roles. Fernando also played for the Spanish national team in the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

Playing Career Highlights
Fernando spent most of his football career at his hometown club, Valencia CF. He played for them for 15 seasons as a senior player. He became known as an amazing playmaker. He was also a great goal scorer from midfield, scoring 14 league goals twice. He was the team captain for Valencia.
Valencia CF Years
Fernando holds the club record for most La Liga matches played, with 420 games. He is also the fourth-highest scorer for Valencia, with 142 goals in all competitions. He first played for the main team on 15 January 1984. This was in a game against Real Valladolid. He had moved up from Valencia's reserve team, CD Mestalla.
Fernando became a key player in the 1986–87 season. That year, his team won promotion back to the top league, the Segunda División. He spent almost all his time with Valencia in the top division. During this time, Valencia finished second in the league twice. They also reached the final of the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) in 1995.
In 1988–89, Fernando won the Don Balón's Best Spanish Player Award. He then joined the Spanish national team later that year.
Time Away from Valencia
Fernando left Valencia's home stadium, Mestalla Stadium, in August 1998. He moved to England to play for Wolverhampton Wanderers. This was a team in the English First Division. He played one season there, scoring two goals.
After his time in England, Fernando returned to Spain. He signed with CD Castellón, a team in the Valencian Community. He played one season there before retiring in 2000, when he was almost 35 years old.
Life After Playing Football
After retiring as a player, Fernando stayed involved in football. He became the director of football for CD Castellón. Later, he worked as a sports commentator for radio and television.
In July 2008, Fernando returned to Valencia CF as their sporting director. He held this role for two years.
Coaching Career
Fernando started managing football teams when he was in his 50s. His first coaching job was at CF Torre Levante in the Tercera División. He left that role in September 2016. The next year, in July, he joined UD Alzira in the same league. He coached them until November 2018.
After coaching UD Alzira, he spent a season at UD Benigànim. In June 2021, he returned to Castellón as their sporting director.
International Games for Spain
Fernando played eight games for the Spanish national team. He scored two goals for his country. His first game was on 15 November 1989, in a 4–0 win against Hungary. This was a qualifying game for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He scored the last goal in that game.
He was then chosen to play in the World Cup in Italy. He came on as a substitute in a 3–1 win against South Korea during the group stage.
Before playing for the senior team, Fernando also played for Spain's youth teams. He played in the 1985 FIFA World Youth Championship for the Under-20 team. He was one of the top scorers in that tournament, with three goals, as Spain reached the final.
Personal Life and Nickname
Fernando comes from a very educated family. His father was a university department head. His brothers became a law professor and a doctor. Fernando's own sons also played football, but they did not become professional players. Because of his studious background, Fernando was nicknamed "El Catedrático" (The Professor).
In April 2011, Fernando got involved in local politics. He joined the People's Party in Chiva, Valencia. He ran for a position in the local elections. He served one term as a city councilor in charge of sports. He did not run for re-election in 2015.
