Fernando del Paso Morante (born April 1, 1935 – died November 14, 2018) was a famous Mexican writer. He wrote many novels, essays, and poems. He is known for his unique writing style.

Life and Career of Fernando del Paso

Fernando del Paso was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He studied economics for two years at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Later, he moved to London, England. He lived there for 14 years. During this time, he worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation.

After London, he moved to France. There, he worked for Radio France Internationale. He also briefly served as the Consul General of Mexico. This is a high-ranking diplomat role.

Important Literary Works

One of his most important novels is Noticias del Imperio (1986). This title means "News from the Empire." The book tells the story of Maximilian and Carlota. They were a royal couple during the French Intervention in Mexico.

Fernando del Paso called this book a "historiographic" novel. This means it mixes history with storytelling. Instead of just one truth, the author shows many possible versions of events. This makes the reader think about history in a new way.

Honors and Recognitions

Fernando del Paso was a member of El Colegio Nacional de México since 1996. This is a very important group of Mexican artists and scientists. He won many international awards for his writing.

Library Named in His Honor

On May 14, 2007, the Universidad de Guadalajara honored Fernando del Paso. They named a large library and media center after him. This library is in Ocotlán, Jalisco, Mexico. It is called the "Biblioteca Fernando del Paso."

This library is the biggest in western Mexico. It has 120,000 books and can hold 800 people at once. It is a great place for students and readers.
