Ferzan Özpetek is a famous Turkish-Italian film director and screenwriter. He was born on February 3, 1959. Since 1978, he has lived in Italy, where he has created many popular movies.

About Ferzan Özpetek

Ferzan Özpetek was born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1959. When he was 17, in 1976, he decided to move to Italy. There, he studied Cinema History at Sapienza University of Rome. He also took classes in art history and costume design. He even studied directing at the Silvio D'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Art.

After gaining experience in theater, he started working in movies. He became an assistant director for well-known filmmakers like Massimo Troisi and Maurizio Ponzi. His first job as an assistant director was for Troisi's film Scusate il ritardo.

First Films and Success

Özpetek directed his first movie, Hamam, in 1997. This film was a team effort between Italy, Spain, and Turkey. It was shown at the 50th Cannes Film Festival and was sold in over 20 countries.

In 1999, he directed Harem Suare. This movie was set in his home country, Turkey. It told a love story during the fall of the Ottoman Empire. The film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival and other international festivals.

His 2001 film, The Ignorant Fairies (Le fate ignoranti), was a big hit. It starred Margherita Buy and Stefano Accorsi. The movie explored themes of friendship and different kinds of relationships. It won many awards, including three Globo d'oro and four Nastro d'Argento awards.

In 2003, Özpetek released Facing Windows (La finestra di fronte). This film also won many awards, like five David di Donatello awards. Its success in Europe led to it being shown in North America.

Later Works and Recognition

Ferzan Özpetek continued to make successful films. In 2005, he directed Sacred Heart. This movie received 12 nominations at the David di Donatello awards. The lead actress, Barbora Bobuľová, won the Best Actress award for her role.

His 2007 film, Saturn in Opposition, featured a strong cast. It won several awards, including four Ciak d’oro. One of the actresses, Ambra Angiolini, won a David di Donatello award for her first acting role.

In 2007, Özpetek was a judge at the 64th Venice International Film Festival. He also directed commercials, including one for cancer research.

In 2008, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City honored him. They showed all of his movies, which is a special recognition for a director.

In 2010, his film Loose Cannons was released. It was a comedy about family issues. The city of Lecce made him an honorary citizen because of this movie.

In 2011, he directed the opera "La traviata" at the San Carlo Opera House. It was performed in December 2012.
