What Does California Fescue Look Like?
California fescue is a bunch grass. This means it grows in clumps or tufts, like a small bush, instead of spreading out with underground stems. It doesn't have rhizomes, which are like underground roots that spread.
This grass grows in greenish-gray clumps. It can reach about 1.5 to 4.5 feet (0.5 to 1.4 meters) tall and 1.5 to 3.5 feet (0.5 to 1.1 meters) wide. Its green-gray leaves are narrow and can grow up to 2 feet (0.6 meters) long.
The plant's flowers grow on tall stems, which can be up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) high. These stems hold small flower clusters called spikelets, each about 1 to 2 centimeters long. The flowers appear in large, open sprays during spring and summer. California fescue reproduces from its seeds and from new buds that grow at the base of the plant clump.
How People Use California Fescue
Growing California Fescue in Gardens
Many special nurseries grow Festuca californica as an ornamental grass. This means it's grown for its beauty in gardens. People plant it in traditional gardens, in pots, and in special gardens that save water, called drought-tolerant gardens. It's also great for wildlife gardens and natural landscaping projects.
This grass is often planted under Coast live oak trees (Quercus agrifolia) in gardens. It's a good choice because it doesn't need much water in the summer. Giving too much water to oak trees in summer can actually harm them. California fescue is also planted on slopes to help stop soil from washing away, thanks to its deep and strong root system.
Different Types of California Fescue
There are different types of California fescue called cultivars. These are plants that have been specially grown to have different leaf colors or textures. Some popular types include:
- Festuca californica 'Serpentine Blue' — This one has blue-gray-green leaves.
- Festuca californica 'River House Blues' (Ron's California Fescue) — This type has a chalky blue color.
- Festuca californica 'Gabilan Blues' — This one features shiny light blue leaves.
- Festuca californica 'San Rafael Blue' — This variety has silver blue-green leaves.
- Festuca californica 'Blue Fountain' - Suncrest Nurseries — This type also has a chalky blue color.
Helping Nature with California Fescue
In ecological restoration projects, Festuca californica is very useful. It's planted along with other native grasses to help bring back natural habitats like California coastal prairies. This helps to restore the balance of nature in those areas.
