What Makes Fetter's Mill Village Special?
A "historic district" is a group of buildings, structures, or objects that are important because of their history or architecture. Fetter's Mill Village has several key parts that make it historic.
These include:
- A wagon shed and John Conner's art studio from 1751.
- The Alnwick Grove Train Station, built around 1870.
- The Bryn Athyn Train Station, which also served as a Post Office, built in 1902.
- An old farmhouse from about 1790.
- A stone barn.
- Two iron bridges, built in 1883 and between 1916-1917.
- A milk platform from around 1900.
Also in the district is the famous Fetter's Mill, which was built around 1740. It is so important that it is listed separately as a historic place.
How a Community Grew Here
This area became very important to members of The New Church from Philadelphia. They loved to visit the countryside for church trips and picnics. A popular spot was Alnwick Grove, which even had its own train station, the Alnwick Grove Station. Today, this old station is a private home.
After visiting, a wealthy church member named John Pitcairn, Jr decided to buy land here. This land was known as Knights Farm. Over time, this area grew into a significant center for the church. It is now home to the impressive Bryn Athyn Cathedral. Pitcairn also built several family estates here, including Cairnwood, Cairncrest, and Glencairn.
