Fiction Records is a British record label, which is a company that helps musicians record and sell their music. It was started in 1978 by a music expert named Chris Parry. Today, it's owned by the giant music company Universal Music Group.

For more than 20 years, Fiction Records was famous for being the record label for the popular band The Cure. The label is based in the United Kingdom and its music is shared worldwide through the Virgin Music company.

History of the Label

The Early Years with The Cure

Fiction Records was created in the late 1970s by Chris Parry. At the time, Parry worked for another label called Polydor and was also the manager for The Cure. He started Fiction Records as a special part of Polydor.

The label became very well-known because of The Cure's success. In 1992, Fiction Records had its first number-one album in the United Kingdom with The Cure's album Wish. A song from that album, "Friday I'm in Love", was also a huge hit in America.

During this time, Fiction also worked with other bands like Eat, The God Machine, and The Passions.

A Quiet Period

Starting in 1995, Fiction Records became less active. It mainly released new music from The Cure but didn't sign many new artists. The company focused more on music publishing, which involves managing the rights to songs.

In 2001, the publishing part of the company, called Fiction Songs, was sold to another music group.

The Label's Big Return

In 2004, Fiction Records was brought back to life. The goal was to sign more guitar-based rock bands. The first big success of the "new" Fiction was the song "Run" by the band Snow Patrol. It was a top-five hit in the UK.

Snow Patrol's album, Final Straw, sold over two million copies around the world. This showed that Fiction Records was back and ready to find new, exciting music. In 2014, Fiction became its own independent label again, no longer part of Polydor.
