The Thames Path on Fiddler's Island

Fiddler's Island is a small island located in the famous River Thames in Oxford, England. It sits just south of a large open area called Port Meadow. The island is found on the part of the river just before you reach Osney Lock.

Exploring Fiddler's Island

Where is Fiddler's Island?

The northern part of Fiddler's Island is nestled between the main River Thames and a smaller waterway. This smaller stream is called Castle Mill Stream, which is a branch of the Thames. Another stream, named Fiddler's Island Stream, flows along the eastern side of the island's southern part.

To the south of the island, you'll find the Sheepwash Channel. This short waterway connects back to the Castle Mill Stream and the Oxford Canal. It helps link different parts of the river system around Oxford.

What Can You See on the Island?

The popular Thames Path runs all the way along Fiddler's Island. This path is great for walking and enjoying the riverside views. At the northern end of the island, you can see a line of trees.

On the side facing Castle Mill Stream, there are many places where boats can tie up. This area is often busy with boats moored along the bank.

Bridges Around the Island

Several bridges connect Fiddler's Island to the surrounding areas. The unique rainbow-shaped Medley Footbridge crosses the main part of the Thames. It is located to the west of the island's northern end.

Further south, a flat iron Bailey bridge crosses the Castle Mill Stream. This bridge connects Fiddler's Island to Port Meadow on the east. There is also a small footbridge that carries the Thames Path. This bridge leads along the riverbank towards Osney Bridge.

The northern part of Fiddler's Island is quite narrow. However, the southern part is wider and is connected by another small footbridge. To the east of the island is Cripley Meadow, which is mostly made up of allotments. Allotments are small plots of land rented for growing vegetables and flowers.

A Bit of History

In 1852, the Oxford City Council gave permission for people to go public bathing at Fiddler's Island. This was likely the first place in Oxford officially approved by the council for swimming and bathing in the river.
