The fiery spiny mouse (Acomys ignitus) is a small rodent that belongs to the Muridae family. You can find this unique mouse in parts of Kenya and Tanzania. It naturally lives in dry savanna areas and rocky places. Sometimes, it even lives close to people, like in gardens or homes!

What is a Fiery Spiny Mouse?

The fiery spiny mouse is a bit bigger than most other spiny mice. It measures about 10 cm (4 inches) long. Its name comes from the special hairs on its coat. These hairs are stiff, like tiny quills, and they can easily come off its skin.

What Does It Look Like?

This mouse has a coat that can be deep brown or reddish, mixed with some black on its back. Its belly is white. Some people describe its back as being orange. It has medium-sized ears and black eyes. Unlike some other spiny mice, the fiery spiny mouse does not easily lose its bare, scaled tail.

Where Does the Fiery Spiny Mouse Live?

You can find the fiery spiny mouse in northeastern Tanzania, near the Usambara Mountains, and in southern Kenya. It prefers specific places to live, mostly rocky areas in dry savannas. These areas are usually at lower elevations, between 700 and 1,000 meters high.

Its Special Habitat

These mice often live on cliffs and rocky outcrops. Because of this, their groups are spread out unevenly. However, it's not unusual to find them in places where humans live. They might be in gardens, grain storage units, or straw huts. When they live near people, they can find more food, like seeds. This gives them an advantage over other mice, like Wilson's spiny mouse (A. wilsoni).

What Does the Fiery Spiny Mouse Eat?

The fiery spiny mouse is an omnivore. This means it eats both plants and animals. It mostly eats grains, but it also enjoys munching on insects. In dry areas, where water is scarce, these clever mice can even suck water from leaves to stay hydrated!

How Does the Fiery Spiny Mouse Behave?

Generally, fiery spiny mice are known for being gentle and shy. They rarely bite. They are also nocturnal, which means they are most active during the night hours. They spend their nights looking for food and exploring their surroundings.
