Why Military Districts Were Created

After the Civil War ended in 1865, the Southern states needed a lot of help. The war had caused huge damage. The U.S. government wanted to make sure that the rights of newly freed enslaved people were protected. They also wanted to make sure the Southern states followed new laws. To do this, Congress passed the Reconstruction Acts. These laws divided the South into five military districts. Each district was overseen by a U.S. Army general.

Leaders of the Fifth District

The first general in charge of the 5th Military District was General Philip Sheridan. He was a well-known Union Army leader during the war. General Sheridan was known for being very strict. He worked to enforce the new laws in Texas and Louisiana. However, U.S. President Andrew Johnson thought General Sheridan was too harsh. Because of this, President Johnson removed him from his position. After Sheridan, General Charles Griffin took over. Later, General Joseph J. Reynolds became the commander.

Challenges Faced by Soldiers

Soldiers in the 5th Military District faced various challenges. They were stationed in many places, including Fort Brown in Brownsville, Texas. Sometimes, there were problems and conflicts. These issues often involved groups of people who did not agree with the new laws. The soldiers worked to keep order and protect everyone's rights during this difficult time.

Army Units in the District

Many different U.S. Army units served in the 5th Military District. These soldiers helped to keep peace and enforce the new laws. Some of the cavalry (horseback) regiments included the 4th, 6th, and 9th Cavalry Regiments. Infantry (foot soldier) regiments like the 15th, 17th, 20th, 25th, and 41st Infantry Regiments were also present. The U.S. 1st Artillery Regiment also had troops in the area. The 35th Infantry Regiment was stationed in San Antonio, Texas, for several years. It was often led by Brigadier General John S. Mason. These units played a key role in the Reconstruction efforts in Texas and Louisiana.
