The Xylotoles griseus, also known as the fig longhorn beetle, is a type of beetle that belongs to the longhorn beetle family. These beetles are known for their long antennae, which can sometimes be longer than their bodies!

This particular beetle was first described by a scientist named Johan Christian Fabricius way back in 1775. He originally placed it in a different group of beetles called Saperda.

Where Do Fig Longhorn Beetles Live?

The fig longhorn beetle is originally from New Zealand. It is quite common there and can be found in many places. These beetles like to live and breed on different kinds of trees.

What Do Fig Longhorn Beetles Eat?

In New Zealand, the fig longhorn beetle mostly feeds on elm trees. However, they are not too picky and can feed on many other types of trees as well. This helps them spread out and live in many different areas.

In 2014, something interesting happened. The fig longhorn beetle was found in the United Kingdom for the very first time! Several adult beetles were discovered near a recently cut fig tree in a place called Westward Ho! in Devon. This was a new discovery for that region.
