First Minister facts for kids
A First Minister is the main leader of a government in some countries or regions. Think of them as the head of a team that runs a part of a country.
In the United Kingdom, the title "First Minister" was once used to mean the same as the Prime Minister. For example, Winston Churchill famously said, "I did not become His Majesty's First Minister so that I might oversee the liquidation of the British Empire!" This quote shows how important the role was, even when called "First Minister."
Today, the title "First Minister" is used for the leaders of the devolved governments in the UK. These are governments that have been given some power to make decisions for their own regions, rather than everything being decided by the main UK government in London.

Leaders of Devolved Governments
The UK has three main devolved governments, each led by a First Minister:
Scotland's First Minister
The First Minister of Scotland leads the Scottish Government. This government makes decisions on many things that affect people in Scotland, like education, health, and justice. The First Minister is usually the leader of the largest political party in the Scottish Parliament. They work to improve life for people in Scotland and represent Scotland on the world stage.
Wales' First Minister
In Wales, the leader of the Welsh Government is called the First Minister of Wales. Similar to Scotland, the Welsh Government has powers over areas like health, education, and local services within Wales. The First Minister of Wales is chosen from the members of the Senedd (the Welsh Parliament) and leads the government's work to serve the people of Wales.
Northern Ireland's First Minister
Northern Ireland has a unique system where there are two leaders: the First Minister and deputy First Minister. They share power and work together to lead the Northern Ireland Executive (their government). This arrangement helps ensure that different communities in Northern Ireland are represented in the leadership. They make decisions on local matters for Northern Ireland.
The Role of a First Minister
A First Minister has many important jobs. They are responsible for leading their government, setting policies, and making sure that public services run smoothly. They also represent their region at important meetings and speak for the people they serve. It's a big job that requires strong leadership and a commitment to their region.
