The University in 1903

The Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University started a long time ago, in September 1897. It was first called the Medical Institute for Women. This was a big step because it helped women get an education in medicine.

Money from the family of Lydia Shanyavskaya, who worked for women's rights, helped start the institute. Marta Helena Nobel-Oleinikoff, who was a student there and a niece of Alfred Nobel, also gave a large donation early on.

The university's name changed a few times over the years. In 1918, it became the Women’s Medical Institute of St. Petersburg. Then, in 1924, it was renamed the First Medical Institute of Leningrad. In 1936, it was renamed again to honor Ivan Pavlov, a famous scientist who won a Nobel Prize.

In 1994, the institute became a full medical university. It was then officially named Pavlov Saint Petersburg State Medical University.
